Hurds Hill is a Regency country house with Victorian and later additions. It was the home of Langport’s most famous resident, Walter Bagehot, who is regarded as one of the 19th century’s most influential writers on government, the constitution, banking and finance. He was editor of the Financial Times for 16 years from 1860 to 1876.

The present owners acquired the property in 2011 and have spent two years renovating the house, which now offers modern meeting rooms and residential accommodation. The house is set in 5 acres of private and peaceful grounds with far-reaching views over the Somerset Levels, yet still just eight miles from the M5.

There are 15 individually designed bedrooms, themed to house the owners’ eclectic collection of furniture, pictures and books. The experience is not like the usual anonymous, bland conference facility, but more like staying in a private house, with everything you need from a successful business meeting to a private party venue, all in a relaxed environment.  Over recent years the house is becoming more firmly established as an ideal Retreat venue.

We offer a flexible arrangement to clients and will tailor events to your particular needs, from simply hiring a meeting room for a half-day to a residential conference with breakfast, buffet lunch and dinner and wines in the evening.
